Dublin’s Statues – Part Two

By John Gavin  //  Ireland Hotels, helloIreland  //  Comments Off

As I said  in my last post on the subject, Dublin has a plethora of amazing statues.

And Dublin wit being what it is most of these statues have acquired amusing nicknames and some more examples are below…..

Other statues have not acquired nicknames as will be explained in the next installment of  – “Dublin’s Statues”…… but for now enjoy…..

“Meeting Place” is a landmark statue of two ladies sitting talking with their shopping bags at their feet – situated on Liffey Street near to the Ha’penny Bridge it is known to Dubliners as “the hags with the bags”. Close to the fun and happening 3 star Arlington City Centre Hotel

Oscar Wilde – Dublin’s celebrated playwright and wit reclines on a rock in Merrion Square looking across at the house where he once lived – Mr Wilde’s statue has acquired lots of alternative names – amongst them are “the quare on the square”, ”the queen on the green” and “the fag on the crag”  For a truly opulent stay the amazing 4 star O’Callaghan’s Davenport Hotel is directly in Oscar’s line of sight!!! Oscar would definitely approve!

Patrick Kavanagh – the great Irish poet and novelist is situated on the bank of the Grand Canal at Wilton Terrace near Baggot Street Bridge and has become known to Dubliners as “the crank on the bank”  – he looks across the Grand Canal directly at the lovely 3 star Mespil Hotel, definitely one of Dublin’s finest 3 star hotels!

Well that’s it for this installment….. next time I will cover some of Dublin’s more serious statues which have NOT been given nicknames for reasons that will become obvious….. Check it out SOON on a computer near you!!!
